load balancing

Hello,

How is load balancing working in SQL Server 2000. We want to have two different servers as a back end for our web based eCommerce application. Is this possible? While there be any modification requirement in the application?

As long as both servers are ODBC-DB or OLE-DB compatible you can do this using Enterprise Manager or T-SQL code. It happens on server side.

Linked servers are listed under the security node under each server in EM. (Left hand pane) Right click node and select 'New Linked Server'

|||

Both servers are SQL Server 2000. What I am trying to achieve is to have a backup for our SQL Server so that if one of them is down, the other is still alive and serving the application. Is this possible? If I have linked server, does that provide me what I need?

|||No. You are looking for clustering.|||

Yes Motley is right.

Clustering will give the impression of two or more servers acting as one and thus provide high-availabiltiy.

A SQL Server cluster however do not balance the SQL load and will not provide scalability.

There's no transparent load balancing in SQL Server. There are options to spread load over several
servers, each has advantages and disadvantages. Things you might want to read about in Books Online:
Distributed partitioned views (aka federated servers)
Replication

little help on delete stored procedure

I created a insert stored procedure but It was not working correctly
Could you correct the code?
I am trying to insert contract information on contract table but before that I want to check the studentID in student table and contactId in contact table if they exist I want to insert into the contract table

Please help!

************************************************** ***
My contrat DDL is follows

create table contract(
contractNum int identity(1,1) primary key,
contractDate smalldatetime not null,
tuition money not null,
studentId char(4) not null foreign key references student (studentId),
contactId int not null foreign key references contact (contactId)
);

************************************************** ***
My insert stored procedure is follows

create proc sp_insert_new_contract
( @.contractDate [smalldatetime],
@.tuition [money],
@.studentId [char],
@.contactId [int])
as
if exists (select s.studentId, c.contactId
from student s, contact c
where @.contactId = contactId
and @.studentId = studentId)

begin
insert into contract
([contractDate],
[tuition],
[studentId],
[contactId])
values
(@.contractDate,
@.tuition,
@.studentId,
@.contactId)

end
else
print 'studentId and contactId are not valid, please try another studnetId and contactId'
goSyntactically, it should be:

create proc sp_insert_new_contract
( @.contractDate [smalldatetime],
@.tuition [money],
@.studentId [char] (4),
@.contactId [int])
as
if exists (select s.studentId, c.contactId
from student s, contact c
where @.contactId = contactId
and @.studentId = s.studentId)
...

But logically, you're also missing a validity of JUST a student id:

declare @.student_check char(4)
select @.student_check = max(studentid) from student where studentid = @.studentid
if @.student_check is null begin
print 'Invalid studentid specified'
return (1)
end

if exists (select 1 from contact
where @.contactId = contactId
and @.studentId = @.studentId) begin
print 'Specified studentid/contractid already exist in the table!'
return (1)
end
...
After then you can go on with the rest of your procedure.

List Server Roles

I am currently working on a SSIS configuration database. However, I am having trouble writing a script to get the the users that have each server role permissions. I'm pretty sure that I need to use sp_helpsrvrole, but am not sure where to go from here. If anybody has any ideas or has seen a script on the internet to get this then that would be a tremendous help.

Thanks in advance,

Kyle

Please try:

exec sp_helpsrvrolemember

this should get the server role membership information you are looking for. Let us know if you have any further questions.

of all the current reports being ran? thanks! On Mar 2, 11:25 am, "Smokey Grindel" <nos...@.nospam.com> wrote:

I don't have the link but if you check the microsoft report packs I
beleive there are some reports for this...
Cheers,
Ben|||Take a look at the ReportService2005 Web service... There is a job class

List Filtering NOT Working

I have a Report where i want to show in a DataList only those values Filtered by one of the fields of my dataset. I want to show a Date value ONLY if another column value in that row in my dataset = "IN".

But nothing seems to happen here. No records are shown. It's like the condition is never true.

Steps:

1. I drag a DataList

2. I drag a DatasetField inside the DataList (automatically creates a textbox)

3. Right Click on the Datalist, Properties, then Filter Tab

I use the following statement on the Filter tab

=Cstr(Fields!TransactionType.Value) Like "IN"

or

=Cstr(Fields!TransactionType.Value) = "IN"

it doesnt work at all.

Does anyone knows what's going on?

Thanks

Jose

I've noticed that in filtering sometimes, in fact in most cases, I have to explicitly cast each side to the correct data type. So in your case

Expression: Operator: Value:

=Cstr(Fields!TransactionType.Value) = = Cstr("IN")

Hope this helps.

List box page break

I have a report that I am working on that has a list box. The
properties of this list box are set to "insert a page break at the end
of this list". But it doesn't work. Also, I find that I can't put
"fields" in a page footer. I seem to remember that I can put a text
box in the footer referencing the value of a field in the body of the
report(i.e. the text box in the body references a database field and
the footer text box references the body text box value) Any
suggestions? Thanks in advance. RonI found the answer to both items. I had one field that was set to "can
grow..." I unchecked this item and set the field size to accomodate the text
that would appear. This caused my page breaks to work properly. I also found
the format to refer to a field in the report to wit:
ReportItems!textboxname.value
