Load balancing.
I have two sql servers. One raid rack in the middle for them both.
I installe two cluster groups, with two sql installation.
Now I can put a db on one server and it can fail over to the other one and
the other way around. Fine.
But how can I set it up so the same db is located one both cluster groups
(on the raid and shared by both cluster groups) and use some kind of load
balacing system to harvest the power of both servers for one db.
The only ways I have found so far is DTC and replikation. DTC no slack in
time for having the db exactly the same on both servers, but needs knowledge
and rewrite of code to use DTC transactions. Replikation, slack in time in
update between the cluster groups.
Is there another way to do this? We want to use the power of both servers in
a normal situation, have the fail over if one goes down, only one copy of
the db. No slack in time between the both servers.

cj
SQL 2000 Clustering is not capable of load balancing a database.

Load Balancing SSAS Servers
Hello,
We are trying to load balance a pair of SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services query servers using hardware load balancing (Foundry switches) but we don't seem to be able to get it to work.
The main problem as far as I can tell is that we can't get the SSAS instances to listen on the IP address of the loopback adapter which is configured on both servers.
The netstat -ano command shows that the SSAS instances are only listening on the IP address of the physical NIC in each machine.
We are using a custom port and I can see where this custom port is defined in the msmdsrv.ini file but I can't see anywhere where you can tell SSAS the IP addresses on which to listen.
Should SSAS listen on all available IP addresses when it starts up ? We have re-booted both boxes but this hasn't made any difference ?
Can anyone shed some light on this please ?
Regards,
Paul Lynch
Hi Paul, I have not done anything like this before, so this is a bit of a long shot. I was wondering if the security setting that you need to change in order to use application names might need to be changed. see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888526 - this article is for AS2000, but I think the same approach still applies for AS2k5.
I think by default it checks that the name/ip address match each other, so this may help.
|||Hi Darren,
Thanks for your reply.
We actually found the problem - the network guy had forgotten to configure something called Direct Server Return (DSR) on the Foundry so the traffic wasn't being forwarded properly to the SSAS boxes. When I looked into it again I realised that the SSAS process was actually listening on the loopback adapter address as well as the IP address of the physical NIC so the problem wasn't what I originally thought it was.
We are now able to connect to the VIP address on the port specified in SSAS and it appears to connect OK (I can connect from the front-end web server using SQL Management Studio so I'm assuming its working)
However, the KB article you posted has got me thinking that maybe we need to configure an application name for it to work - I'll need to speak to the DBA's because I'm out of my depth with this already - I'm just an IIS guy ;-)
Thanks again.
Paul

Load balancing and report servers
first web server always uses the first reporting server, and the second web
server the second reporting server. There is no shared state, and a given
user session always goes to the same web server. Report output is displayed
via a ReportViewer web control.
They'd like to move to true load balancing of the web servers, but don't
want to pay the extra for SQL Server Enterprise licenses that reporting
server farm require.
Looking at the HTTP traffic the ReportViewer sends request to the web server
to be handled by
/Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd
...with some parameters, two of which...
?ReportSession=3dobaffxgmkaduj5rukvhxvy
&ControlID=841538b0792b4b27bf84e1da251a8d87
...look as though they would provide a key to some configuration information.
If we changed to shared state, and true load balancing (such that a request
could go to any web server), what would happen when the user chose to move to
the next page in a report or output a report to PDF?
Would the web server be able to find the correct session information and
forward the request to the reporting server that originally generated the
output?
Thanks,
DukeHello Duke,
According to the documents in BOL, we did not recommand customer to use
only one reporting services on the Load Balance Node.
I may consulting the internal member to check whether you could do this or
not. Thank you!

I'm not sure if you're talking about MSSQL (Microsoft SQL Server) or MySQL.
In the case of MSSQL, clustering is supported for failover only, not for
load-balancing. If you need load-balancing, then it can be implemented in a
middle-tier.

I mean an application server, such as WebSphere, WebLogic, Microsoft
Transaction Server etc., which sits between the web server and the
database server. Clients connect to the application server, which
manages all the database connections, so you can use the application
server to spread database access across several physical databases.

load balancing
Hello,
How is load balancing working in SQL Server 2000. We want to have two different servers as a back end for our web based eCommerce application. Is this possible? While there be any modification requirement in the application?
As long as both servers are ODBC-DB or OLE-DB compatible you can do this using Enterprise Manager or T-SQL code. It happens on server side.
Linked servers are listed under the security node under each server in EM. (Left hand pane) Right click node and select 'New Linked Server'
|||Both servers are SQL Server 2000. What I am trying to achieve is to have a backup for our SQL Server so that if one of them is down, the other is still alive and serving the application. Is this possible? If I have linked server, does that provide me what I need?
Yes Motley is right.
Clustering will give the impression of two or more servers acting as one and thus provide high-availabiltiy.
A SQL Server cluster however do not balance the SQL load and will not provide scalability.
Load balancing
Is it possible to use windows NLB for Sql 2000 enterprise edition servers.
We are using 300gb database in one server and the performance is very slow.
Any how we can't get load balancing in SQL clustering, If it is possible
with NLB please let me know how to configure it.
We are planning to put the database in SAN ,so both the servers will use
central database instead of individual one.

This wont' work. Each instance of SQL server needs access to its own copy
of the database files.
What you can try is log-shipping or replication from one server to another.

|||Hi,
Thanks for your response .
log shipping may not suitable to our requirement.
we are using on CRM application , from the application server through odbc
it will contact the sql server.
We can't specify multiple servers in odbc connection for sqlserver even if
we use log shipping.
Please give some other resolution which will distribute the load between 2
servers.
Thanks

|||Buy a bigger server. NLB will split the query load between several servers,
but there is no way to coalesce the changes on the back end. Each server
instance has a unique, independant set of databases that are only accessable
through that instance. In a clustered environment, eacn instance can move
between hosts, but can only live on one host at a time. SQL scales up, not
out.

SQL Server does not do load balancing automatically.
You should look at partitioning your data and using partitioned views to
build a pseudo-load balanced set of database tables.

There's no transparent load balancing in SQL Server. There are options to spread load over several
servers, each has advantages and disadvantages. Things you might want to read about in Books Online:
Distributed partitioned views (aka federated servers)

Load Balancer and Connection Pooling
We have 2 main database servers, with our clients accessing either one DB or another via a website click. Our application, in the background, chooses randomly, which server to connect to. This approach achieves simulated load balancing.
For efficiency purposes, we also have the application manage connection pooling.
Recently, we realized that our current "simulated load balancing" is not good enough, as it blindly chooses which server to connect to, without considering the current workload of that server. We are now considering to acquire a load balancer [i.e. hardware piece] so that the load is balanced more wisely, by it. Our only concern is connection pooling. Will connection pooling still work with the new, proposed topology [i.e. applications sit to the left of the load balancer and the db servers to the right of it, with the load balancer in the middle].
If anyone has had any experience with this and could share or give advice, it would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot! Each connection will be bound to one specific server. What you can do however is having a timeout value associated with each connection, letting it live for some 30 seconds or so. In this way you can ensure that the load is balanced, while still limiting the number of connections made to the SQL Server. Please remember to include logic to reconect if you don't get an answer on an active connection :)|||Thanks for the suggestion roac!
load balanced scale out deployment issues
I have a scale out deployment of Reporting Services consisting of 2 Report
Servers in a load balanced cluster using an F5 BigIP setup in RoundRobin
mode, and the report catalog db sits on on a separate sql server. We use a
vIP with a DNS name that hits the F5. The F5, in turn, is setup to "choose"
one of the 2 Report Servers using the machine name address. Note that this
is for an intranet.
We are not currently using HTTPS (SSL) in our environment, but eventually
we'll turn it on, so ignore that piece of the puzzle for this scenario.
When configuring the scale-out deployment, we followed the instructions on
the Books Online article "Configuring a Report Server Scale-out Deployment."
The last piece of this document instructs us to modify the
RSWebApplication.config file for all the servers in the scale out deployment,
setting the <ReportServerUrl> element to use the virtual server name (vIP
DNS, we assumed), instead of the machine name. However, this element did not
contain a value originally.
The next step was to modify the RSReportServer.config file, to set the
<UrlRoot> element with the virtual server name (again, vIP dns). UrlRoot's
original value as the url <servername>/reportserver.
Once this change was made, I reset IIS on both servers, and hit each
localhost's Report manager to fire up the applications. However, I received
the following error "ReportServerUrl Configuration element is not a valid
configuration..." on both Report Manager web apps.
Note that before we made the above change to ReportServerUrl and UrlRoot,
both servers worked fine. So, I went back in and removed the value from
ReportServerUrl, but left the UrlRoot with the vIP name. Reset IIS, and the
error went away!
I am a little confused as to what these two settings are used for, since the
original value of ReportServerUrl was blank (UrlRoot actually had the machine
name address).
Could someone explain the cause of this error, and suggest a best practice
for this scenario. I would like to use the most efficient configuration
between the Report Servers and the F5 load balancer, and what other changes
would we be looking at once we turn on SSL?
Thanks!

Thiago Silvabtw, this is using SSRS 2005 (Enterprise Edition, of course, since it's a web
farm).

Listing Available SQL Servers
For instance: when I create a data link using OLE DB there
is a ComboBox that lists all of the available SQL Servers
to connect to. How does this list get generated and
refreshed? I ask this because I see a particular server in
the list on my PC but I have a coworker whose list does
not contain the server.Doug,
