Little SQL icon gone in SQL Server 2005?
Just installed SQL Server 2005 for the first time. Now, whenever I have
installed SQL Server 2000 in the past, I am used to seeing a little gray
server icon in the System tray which has either a green arrow on it if SQL
services are running or a red square on it if SQL services are stopped. I
no longer see this icon did Microsoft take it away?

Lite speed compatible to SQL KATMAI CTP -3
Is there a new version for lite speed we need to use in SQL katmai CTP-3 version.
I installed Litespeed 2005 but i am unable to use "xp_backup_database" stored procedure after intstalling litespeed 2005.
Litespeed is a third-party application. You need to ask the vendor, Imceda.|||Thanks But Do we have any beta version of SQL Lite Speed which is compatible with the SQL Server Katmai CTP3 version, as the current version which we use for SQL Server 2005 is not working ?
Or any time frame in which this might come up if it hasn’t yet?

ListAvailableSQLServers not refreshing (VB-Sql server 2000)
by using SQLDMO (ListAvailableSQLServers ) from another pc where
only Sql client is installed
and the list of all servers are avilable.
but when one of the server is down or shut down , the list is not
refreshed and giving error
how to the refresh the server list with out restarting . ping is
another option , but a connection object is
necessary for that.ListAvailableSQLServers consults the local domain browser or master domain
brower for a list of SQL Servers which are registered with it. It may or may
not be current, and it doesn't track active (or running) SQL Servers. You
would need something like ODBC ping for that. ping does not require a
connection object, but if you are trying to make a connection with SQL
Server, you will need a connection object (the connect method of
SQLDMO.SQLServer)

Lisen Port
I've an aplication make with Apache TomCat that uses the SQL as a DB motor,
i've installed the MSDE version.
Now the Apache couldn't conect with SQL, i think that the problem is in the
conection port, because i created an ODBC conection (in the server machine)
and it only runs property when i mark the option "detect port automaticly",
when i indicated the 1433 port the conection fails. In the apache
configuration i must put the conection port (pe. MYSERVER:1433), i tried
with the port 1433 but it don't works.
could somebody help me?
thanks

if you installed a default instance of MSDE it will listen on TCP/IP 1433
port, where named instances usually use dynamically assigned ports, those
requiring UDP 1434 port to be available for the SQL Server Resolution
Service, which will then report the appropriate network endpoints to use for
the particular SQL Server instance, redirecting the MDAC (requires MDAC 2.6
or above) client connections to the appropriate TCP port
you can however set a fixed port using the Server Network Utility
(svrnetcn.exe) and specifying the preferred port (TCP/IP 1433 in your case)
and thus resolving your problem...

liscensing for client tools?
the client tools on all the workstations that I want, or are there
liscensing concerns with doing that? If anyone knows of web page links that
outlines this it would be helpful for me to print that to show management to
make them more comfortable.
Scott
I am guessing that you have purchased the appropriate number of licenses, or
you went with per-processor licensing. In either case you should be ok to
install the client tools on the developer machines.
End users do not need the client tools as they will be accessing the
database via a GUI that you guys wrote or purchased.

|||If you have a licensed copy of SQL Server you can install the client tools

|||Rand,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the "concurrent number of users"
licensing model go away in SQL Server 2000? The original poster didn't
specify what version of SQL Server s/he was using, but in 2000 the only
licensing models are processor licensing and CAL licensing. There is no
license option that simply enforces a limit on the number of concurrent
users. My understanding of the licensing requirements for the tools
(for SQL Server 2000) is this:
1) If the SQL Server license is a processor license, the license allows
unlimited installation of the tools within the organization holding the
processor license, to connect to that licensed server. I'm not sure
where there's an exact definition of "within the organization", but I
assume this means on computers owned by the licensee and used by
employees of the licensee.
2) If the SQL Server license is a server license, then a CAL (client
access license) is required to connect to that server. Whether or not
the tools can be installed and used without connecting to the server,
I'm not sure, but that's likely not the question here. I don't believe
the tools are redistributable, in any case.

You response is correct. My answer about installing it on an many machines
as you wanted to assumed that the machines would be with in the
organization that owned the license to SQL Server.

Linux user: creating databases
I just installed MSSQL 2005 Express but I can′t find a sql client I can use to create databases.
Do I have to download it or it′s placed somewhere on my HD?
The only tools I see are placed at Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Serve 2005 > Configuration Tools
Sorry about the dump question. I come from a linux background and everything seems to be different!
Cheers.
The download for the Express Edition does not include a GUI tool for managing the database. We have posted a pre-release version of the free management GUI tool - Management Studio Express Edition on the web for download. You can get it at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=82afbd59-57a4-455e-a2d6-1d4c98d40f6e&DisplayLang=en.
You can also download the documentation for Express at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9697aaaa-ad4b-416e-87a4-a8b154f92787&DisplayLang=en.
Out-of-the-box Express includes a command line tool SQLCMD for working with the installation (creating databases, creating tables, etc.) You can read more about it in the documentation.
Good luck.
Dan|||Hi Dan. Thanks for your quick reply!
In the meanwhile I downloaded the trial version (~900mb, outch!!).
How do I import ddl files into a database (trial version)?
Can I do it using theManagement Studio Express Edition too?
Cheers!
|||You can execute your sql script using SQLCMD.exe (from the command line) or using the Management Studio Express GUI.
